How the Corruption Works:
- Spoiler:
- The Corruption is a disease affecting Invernesse that started roughly 50 years ago and rapidly spread to affect the whole kingdom. Nobody is sure how exactly it started. It's a mental disease, enhancing negative emotions and drowning out positive ones, with negative emotions gaining more and more strength as the disease progresses. Corruption progresses over the course of one to two weeks, and in its final stages causes insanity and a complete loss of any remaining sentience in the creature it has affected. However, it does not affect them physically, and there's been no incidence of a corrupted creature naturally dying. There is no cure.
How it affects a creature depends on its personality, and it's generally accepted as having two main forms, angry and sad, named after the emotions affected by the disease. Angry corrupted creatures are highly aggressive and dangerous in the final stages of the disease, lashing out at both former friends and former foes, while the sad corrupted creatures are passive and quiet, only attacking if interacted with. The disease seems to lie dormant in everyone and only activates in two different ways, either as a result of the strong emotions caused by someone close to you getting infected, or more gradually as a result of the normal ups and downs of life. Depending on the society, catalyst, and innate optimism of the creature, corruption may take a longer time to take hold and progress, with more isolated creatures like robots having a much faster spread and progression of corruption.
There are ways to combat the corruption, but they mostly result in the removal of ALL the emotions of the creature, or, in the case of extreme methods like the purging potion, death as a result of improper use.

Trolls
- Spoiler:
- Trolls are a northern species at the very edge of Invernesse. Their largest city is nestled in between two mountains, built solely out of the logs and branches of the trees nearby. Their lives are based on a structured caste system. It's fairly rigid solely due to the difficulties in advancing in rank, but it is possible to do so. Their names determine what caste they're in or hope to be in, with fewer syllables corresponding to a higher rank. 1 syllable names are reserved for extremely high nobles and magicians, 2 syllables are lesser nobles, 3 are high-ranked magicians and the wealthy, 4 for the normal folk, and 5 for the lowest caste, which are considered the scum of the earth and are generally reviled. Because they're so essential to their culture, a troll chooses their final name when they come of age. Before then, babies are given a placeholder name that's in the same caste as their parents. Male trolls always have names that start with T, while females have names beginning with L. There's no real punishment for choosing a name far above your rank or that doesn't conform to the gender tradition, but trolls that do so are looked down upon, or, in Thorb's case, outright reviled.
Though they're above average regarding magical aptitude, trolls are easily spooked. They used to make fine mages before the corruption occurred, but now most spend their time doing recreational or useful magic rather than any designed for combat. As a result, they rarely defend their cities from the dangers surrounding them, preferring to simply hide from conflict and wait for it to pass. Of course, there are exceptions, but trolls that like to fight don't seem to live very long...
